Washington Milk is rbST-free

Washington dairy families work hard to keep your milk pure, fresh and local. It’s important to us that you know what’s in your milk, as well as how our dairy cows are treated. That’s why we feel you should know about rbST.

We want you to drink with confidence. So we ruled out any doubt.

If you’re not familiar with rbST, or recombinant bovine somatotropin, it's a form of a natural hormone produced by the pituitary glands of cows. rbST is given to cows on some U.S. dairy farms to increase milk production. And while the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) have determined that milk products from cows supplemented with rbST are safe for human consumption, it remains a regularly deliberated practice.

RBST Quick Facts:

  1. rbST, or BGH, stands for recombinant bovine somatotropin
  2. The FDA approved the use of rbST for dairy cattle in 1993
  3. rbST enables cows to produce about 10% to 15% more milk
  4. The use of rbST in dairy farming continues to create debate, with the approved use varying by country
  5. To date, there is no FDA-approved test that can differentiate between milk from rbST-supplemented and non-supplemented cows

Regardless of how you feel about rbST, Washington residents can drink a little easier knowing that Washington milk is rbST-free. While numerous studies support the safety of rbST, we also want you to be 100% confident that our products meet your expectations.
